Interview With A Milkman -1996- -2021- May 2026

“It was tough to see the industry change in this way,” John said. “I had to adapt to new routes, new customers, and new products. It was a challenge, but I was determined to make it work.”

We met with John, a seasoned milkman who started his career in 1996 and has been working in the industry ever since. Over the course of our conversation, we discussed his experiences, the changes he’s seen in the industry, and what it’s like to be a part of a profession that is often overlooked.

“It was a great time to be a milkman,” John said. “People were friendly, and they appreciated the service. I knew many of my customers by name, and I would often chat with them about their day, their families, and their lives. In the early days, John’s route consisted of delivering milk to mostly residential areas. He would wake up at 4:00 am every morning to start his day, load up his truck with crates of milk, and set off on his route. He recalls the sound of the bottles clinking as he drove, the smell of the milk, and the feeling of satisfaction he got from knowing he was providing a essential service to his community.

“It was interesting to see how customers reacted to these new products,” John said. “Some were excited to try them, while others were skeptical. But overall, it was great to see the industry adapting to changing consumer needs.” “It was tough to see the industry change

The late 1990s and early 2000s were what John refers to as the “golden years” of his career. This was a time when milk was still a staple in many households, and people relied on the milkman to deliver fresh milk to their doorsteps.
